The client

Foodbank is Australia’s largest food relief organization, operating on a scale that makes it crucial to the work of the front line charities who are feeding vulnerable Australians. Foodbank provides more than 70% of the food rescued for food relief organizations nation-wide.

The challenge

Like most charities, Foodbank relies almost entirely on donations. The majority of its donations come through their website. It is the crucial lifeblood of this amazing charitable organisation. It is literally a matter of life or death.

Not unusually, Foodbank’s website grew out of simple beginnings using the popular WordPress platform, but over time became an ungainly, lumbering beast. Struggling with the load of tens of thousands of visitors each day, it had become increasingly more difficult to maintain and manage on a day-to-day basis. Add to this the distributed, state-based nature of the organisation (each state managing its own content, technology, and donations) it was causing management, technology, and marketing staff significant lost productivity.

The solution

We worked with Foodbank and its many stakeholders to identify a suitable, improved process for the management of their website. We decided to stay with the WordPress platform as the relevant departments were already familiar with the environment and a lot of time and cost would be saved by not needing to retrain the users on a new platform.

One of the biggest challenges was the need to mix state-specific content with content that is common organisation-wide without the need to duplicate such content for each state-specific page. We used TBST’s unique Enterprise WordPress solution that makes it is possible for users to mark content as specific to one state. This content is then displayed in-line at the appropriate place on the page specific to the visitor’s location, without the need to create individual pages for each state.

Using TBST’s Enterprise WordPress solution also allows users to place elements on the page without the need for complex HTML or WordPress knowledge, or resource-hungry page composer-type plug-ins and also includes automated site-wide styling that applies the appropriate formatting to each piece of content, removing the need to manage the adherence to the organisation’s style-guide.

The result

Foodbank now has nearly limitless ability to create content on their website, while reducing the requirement for trained staff. The speed of the website page load has improved by 350% on average over previous, a significant achievement resulting in a much-improved visitor experience, as well as a direct financial saving on hosting resources.
